A group of wiley rugby players and staff gathered at the clubhouse in the dark of Sunday morning, to journey across the strait to play the elite team of veterans of Ebbtide RFC. Whilst on the ferry trip, in a surprise move the Twilighters recruited New Zealand / Ebbtide veteran Alec Hawke.
It was a beautiful autumnal day, where right from the initial kick-off the Twilighters were pinned in their own half, and with the sun in their eye, found it difficult to find their footing on the muddy field of MacDonald Park. Several tries were conceded before a shining beacon in Rob Cust intercepted the ball, and “sprinted” for a Twilighter try.
With un-contested scrums, the Twilighters turned to their next best strengths, lineouts and breakdowns. However the 2nd half did not fare any better, as the Ebbtide long arms of Don Swainson and quick feet stifled any Twilighter progress.
Rob Cust was awarded the Twilighter Man-of-the Match belt, while Jeke Gotegote was awarded Man-of-the-match by Ebbtide.
Despite the loss, Coach Peewee was pleased with everyone’s playing effort, and noted the in game improvements for Dirk and Moose.
The Twilighters may have lost the match, but narrowly won the 8-man boat race with Jeke, Fizzle, Cust, and the match official.
